Storing Your Belongings in Phoenix’s Summer Heat: What You Need to Know

If you’re heading out of town for the summer or just clearing space during a move, Phoenix’s triple-digit heat is something to plan around before you pack up your belongings. Here’s what to know about keeping your items safe when the temperature climbs.

Why heat matters more than you’d think

A closed metal storage unit sitting in direct Phoenix sun can reach temperatures well above the outside air. Wood furniture can warp or crack, electronics and record albums can warp or melt, candles and cosmetics can liquefy, and photos or important documents can become brittle. The damage isn’t always obvious right away, which is why it pays to think ahead.

Choose a container built for the desert

Not all storage is created equal. Our containers are elevated 8 inches off the ground and ventilated to reduce moisture and humidity buildup — a real advantage during monsoon season as well as the dry heat of summer. That airflow makes a noticeable difference compared to a sealed, ground-level unit baking in a parking lot.

Items that need extra care

A few things are worth keeping out of long-term heat exposure altogether, no matter how good the container:

  • Electronics, especially anything with a battery
  • Vinyl records, CDs, and DVDs
  • Candles, crayons, and anything wax-based
  • Musical instruments, particularly those with wood or glue joints
  • Photographs, artwork, and important paper documents

If you’re storing any of these for more than a few weeks in summer, consider keeping them with you or in a climate-controlled space instead.

Timing your move around the heat

If your move date is flexible, early morning delivery and loading sessions make a big difference — both for your comfort and for keeping the container’s interior cooler while the doors are open. Many Phoenix-area customers also plan moves for the cooler months between October and April, though our 30-day rental window gives you plenty of room to work around the heat even in summer.

Snowbird season storage

If you’re one of the many Phoenix-area residents who heads out of state for the summer, a Go Mini’s container is an easy way to consolidate and store your belongings while you’re away, without hauling everything to a storage facility across town. We’ll deliver, you load on your own schedule, and we’ll pick it up when you’re ready.
